Bill Blass Riding High

Bill Blass somewhere in Europe, in a photo taken by his friend Bob Tompkins.  Virtually every photo of Blass taken during the war shows him with a big wide grin.  For me, the three and a half years that I spent in the army represented absolute freedom," he wrote in Bare Blass.  "I was truly on my own for the first time in my life.  So, naturally, in that exuberant state of mind, I didnt always notice how bad things were.
